Student moves in Oxford
College rooms, shared houses and the vacation gap in between — for students at the University of Oxford and Oxford Brookes.
Oxford has two universities and a housing pattern that empties and refills three times a year. It is one of the few places where a whole city's worth of moving happens in the same fortnight — and then again eight weeks later.
We do the small end of that properly: a room's worth of belongings, moved between a college staircase, a shared house off the Cowley Road, a Headington flat, or a storage unit until next term.
College access is not like other access
A college is not a building with a car park. Vehicles do not go into quads, and the way in runs through a porters' lodge. The lodge decides when you can come, how long you can stand on the approach, and which entrance you use. Some colleges have a lift to some staircases; plenty have none at all.
None of that is a problem if it is arranged. It becomes a problem when a van turns up at the gate at the end of Trinity term alongside everybody else's parents. We agree access with the lodge beforehand.
Shared houses
Most of the second and third-year stock is shared houses in East Oxford, Cowley, Headington and Marston — Victorian terraces on streets with residents' parking and no driveway. Often one person is moving out and the rest of the house is not. We work around that: a crew that is in and out without turning the whole house upside down.

The obvious alternative to dragging everything home for the Long Vacation and dragging it back again. We collect at the end of term, inventory and seal it, store it, and deliver it to wherever you are living next term.

Sharing a load
If you are going the same way as somebody else and your date is not fixed, a shared load is the cheapest sensible option. Tell us where you are heading and roughly when, and we will tell you whether anything is running that way.
Questions
Student moves — the usual questions
Can you collect from inside a college?
Yes, with the lodge’s agreement. Vehicles do not go into quads, so we load from the nearest permitted standing point and carry through the lodge, along corridors and up staircases. The college sets the access window and we work to it.
Can my things go into storage over the vacation?
Yes. Goods are inventoried, sealed and stored, and delivered back to whatever address you are in next term. It is usually cheaper and considerably less stressful than hauling everything home and back.
I only have a few boxes. Is that worth booking?
It is — and for small loads the sensible answer is often a shared load with other students moving on the same route, rather than a van to yourself.
Do you move between Oxford and other university cities?
Yes. Moves out to home addresses and on to other universities are ordinary long-distance work for us, and a shared load keeps the cost down if your date is flexible.
