Wantage and Grove have effectively grown into one another, but they move very differently.
Wantage has a compact historic centre built around a genuine working market square, with narrow approaches and listed frontages. Grove has expanded rapidly, with Crab Hill and the newer estates adding a large amount of modern housing on new estate roads.
Around both sit the downland villages — Letcombe Regis and Letcombe Bassett, Ardington, Lockinge, Childrey, East Hendred — where the road is often the constraint long before the house is.
Market square, new estates and downland lanes
Wantage Market Place has a market on set days, and on those days the square is not available for loading. Properties fronting the square and the lanes off it need either a different day or a standing point on an adjoining street with a hand carry.
The lanes between the Market Place and Newbury Street are narrow with restricted turning. We will often bring a smaller vehicle into the centre and transfer to the main van at a staging point rather than attempt a turn that blocks the street for twenty minutes.
At Crab Hill and the newer Grove estates the roads are wide and modern, but many are still unadopted and carry construction traffic. We check current access on the week of the move.
The downland villages have single-track lanes with passing places, low branches and sharp field entrances. Some addresses genuinely cannot take a large vehicle. Where that is the case we say so at the quote and plan a shuttle, rather than arriving with a van that cannot reach the house.

- Crab Hill and Grove — modern layouts, driveway parking, and completion-day timing.
- Downland cottages
- Thatch and stone in the Letcombes and the Hendreds. Low headroom and lane access are the two constraints.
- Farm and barn conversions
- Generous internally, awkward externally — long gravel drives, gate widths and soft ground after rain.
