The longest of our four road routes and the one most often run as a part load — down through France and over the border, to the coast or inland.
Spain is the destination people most often ask us about, and it is also the one where the paperwork does the most damage if it is not right. The move itself is straightforward road haulage. The customs and residency side needs doing properly and in the right order.
Part loads, usually
Because the distance is long, the difference between a full load and a part load is significant. A part load shares the vehicle with other consignments going the same way and costs a great deal less; in exchange, collection and delivery fall within a window rather than on a fixed date. Unless your dates are locked to a completion, a part load is normally the sensible choice to Spain.
The NIE and why it matters first
To claim exemption from import duty on used household goods in Spain you will generally need an NIE number, a certificado de baja consular or equivalent proof you are leaving the UK, proof of your new Spanish address, and a detailed valued inventory signed by you.
The NIE takes time to obtain and it is needed before the goods arrive, not after. People who start the removal process before starting the NIE process are the ones whose possessions sit waiting for clearance. We flag it at the very first conversation for that reason.
Delivering in Spain
A lot of Spanish delivery addresses are apartments in developments with a single small lift, a gated entrance and a security office that controls vehicle access. Others are villas on urbanisations with steep, narrow internal roads that a large articulated vehicle cannot use.
Both are completely normal and both need checking in advance. Where a large vehicle cannot reach the property, the load transfers to a smaller one for the last stretch — the same shuttle principle we use for the Oxfordshire villages.

How the route runs
- 01 Oxfordshire to the Channel A34 or M40 to the M25, then the M20 to Dover or the Eurotunnel at Folkestone.
- 02 Calais to the Spanish border South on the A16 and A10 past Paris, Tours and Bordeaux, then the A63 to Irún, or the A75 and A9 to the Mediterranean crossing at La Jonquera.
- 03 Into Spain The AP-7 down the Mediterranean coast for Catalonia, Valencia and the Costa Blanca; the AP-1 and A-1 inland for Madrid; the A-4 and A-7 for Andalucía and the Costa del Sol.
- 04 Final delivery Urbanisation access, gated communities and apartment lift bookings — all confirmed before the vehicle is on its way.
