Across France and over the Alps — the most interesting of our four routes to drive and the one that most rewards getting the destination access right.
Italy is the route with a mountain range in it, and that single fact shapes everything about how a load is planned.
Crossing the Alps
From Calais the run goes south-east through Reims and Dijon to Lyon, and then either west of Mont Blanc through the tunnel into the Aosta Valley, or south to the Fréjus tunnel into Piedmont. Both are toll tunnels with vehicle restrictions and both can close in severe winter weather.
In deep winter the alternative is the longer coastal route through Nice and Ventimiglia, which adds distance but avoids the mountain passes entirely. We decide that on the conditions at the time rather than committing to a fixed route months ahead.
Italian customs
For a permanent move you will normally need a codice fiscale, proof of your registration with the local comune, evidence of your previous UK residence, and a detailed inventory with values. Used household goods owned for a reasonable period before the move are generally exempt from duty, but the Italian authorities are specific about the documentation.
The local comune registration is the piece most people leave too late. As with Spain, it is worth starting before the removal is booked rather than after.

What Italian delivery looks like
Historic centres
Most Italian towns have a zona a traffico limitato — a restricted traffic zone covering the old centre, with camera enforcement and permits required for access. This is the single biggest practical difference from a UK delivery, and it is far stricter than anything in Oxford. Permits are arranged in advance through the local authority.
Hill towns
Tuscany and Umbria are full of properties reached by steep, narrow, walled streets that a large vehicle simply cannot enter. A smaller shuttle vehicle is normal rather than exceptional.
Apartments
Italian apartment lifts are frequently very small. External furniture hoists are common and are often the only way to get large items above the second floor. That needs to be identified before the load leaves the UK.
Rural properties
Farmhouses and converted properties down unmade tracks — much like the Oxfordshire countryside, with the additional question of whether the track is passable after rain.
