The far end of the western route — across France, down through Spain, and into Portugal. Long, well-trodden, and almost always run as a part load.
Portugal is the longest road move we run and, for most households, the most cost-sensitive. The distance means the difference between a full load and a part load is at its widest here, so it is worth being honest with yourself about how fixed your dates really are.
The route
Down from Oxfordshire to Dover or the Eurotunnel, across France on the A10 through Tours and Bordeaux, over the border at Irún, then across northern Spain and south — either down through Salamanca and into central Portugal, or along the Spanish side to Seville and west into the Algarve.
It is a long haul with mandatory driver rest periods built in. We do not pretend otherwise, and we do not quote a timescale that would require ignoring them.
The certificado de bagagem
Portugal has its own particular requirement: a certificado de bagagem — a baggage certificate — issued by the Portuguese consulate covering your household goods, together with a valued inventory. You will also need a Portuguese NIF number and proof of address at the destination.
The consulate process takes time and has to be complete before the goods arrive. This is the single most common cause of delay on Portuguese moves, and it is entirely within your control if it is started early enough. We tell people this at the first conversation rather than at the point of booking.
Arriving in Portugal
Algarve developments are typically gated, with security controlling vehicle access and internal roads not designed for a large lorry. Lisbon and Porto apartment buildings are often old, with narrow stairwells and lifts that will not take a mattress. Rural properties in the Alentejo and central Portugal sit at the end of unmade tracks.
In every one of those cases, the answer is the same as it is in the Oxfordshire villages: find out first, and bring the right vehicle.

The Algarve
Faro, Lagos, Tavira and the coast. The most common destination, and largely villas and apartments on developments with controlled access.

Lisbon and the Setúbal peninsula
Work relocations and returning residents. Lisbon apartment buildings are old, tall and narrow — lifts are small and stairwells tighter still.

The Silver Coast
Caldas da Rainha, Óbidos, Nazaré and inland. Increasingly popular and generally easier access than the Algarve developments.

Porto and the north
The longest run of all. Almost always a part load, and worth planning well ahead.
