Wallingford keeps its Saxon street grid, which is a pleasure to live in and a genuine constraint to move through. The streets off the Market Place were laid out long before anything the size of a removal van existed.
We move the whole town — the listed frontages in the conservation area, the Victorian and Edwardian streets running out towards Crowmarsh, the newer development at Winterbrook and around Castle Meadows, and the villages along the river.
Two things shape a Wallingford date more than anything else: the market, and the bridge.
Market days, the bridge and the flood plain
The Market Place hosts a regular market, and on those days the square and the approaches to it are effectively closed to a large vehicle. We simply do not book a Market Place loading slot on a market day — we move the date or we work from a different standing point.
Wallingford Bridge is the crossing to Crowmarsh Gifford and the A4074. It is narrow, it is listed, and it carries traffic restrictions. Anything moving between the two sides of the river gets a route plan that accounts for the bridge rather than assuming it.
A number of properties towards the river and out at Winterbrook sit on or near the flood plain. In a wet season the ground beside them will not take a loaded vehicle. We check the standing before we drive onto grass or a soft verge — a van sunk to its axles on moving day helps nobody.
Inside the conservation area, many houses are listed. We protect door frames and stone thresholds as standard, and we will not remove a window or a door frame from a listed property to get an item through. If something will not fit, we say so beforehand.
